Why do we focus on mathematical challenges?

Many organisations are approaching how to build critical thinking in students in various ways, including tinkering, arts, and entrepreneurship. Our focus on building critical thinking through mathematical challenges is driven by a few reasons. Many students fear math and feel it is not for them, and they miss out on valuable career opportunities because of this. Besides, math is a powerful tool to make sense of the world – personal, social, economic, or scientific. Engaging students in mathematical problem-solving where they do the heavy lifting helps build strong reasoning and logical thinking skills.

Our Model

We developed a supplementary program using a hands-on curriculum, learner-centric pedagogy, and facilitator training.

  • In-school or After-school supplementary program

Our Students in Action

  • Using data to understand the world around us

    Grade 7 & 8 students in Mumbai and Pune conducted street audits and analysed their rating to understand their communities better.

  • Students working on hands-on puzzles

    Grade 9 students from JNV schools engaged with a hands-on puzzle - ‘Inverting Traingles’ to experiment with strategies like pattern recognition, prediction and verification.

  • Creating art using math equations

    Grade 6-8 students from Mumbai and Pune engaging with Desmos Graph to create art pieces using mathematical equations.

  • Making your thinking visible

    A student from Tamil Nadu sharing how she identified and extended a pattern that she saw in the puzzle - ‘Tower of Hanoi’

  • Learning strategic thinking through games

    A student from Mumbai explaining a strategy that he developed to win the 3,4,5 NIM game. Students practiced pattern recognition, communication, and strategic thinking in this lesson.
